How This Calculator Works

The math behind any reading time estimate is straightforward: word count divided by reading speed, in words per minute (WPM), gives you minutes. If you enter a page count instead of pasting text, this calculator first converts pages to an estimated word count using a words-per-page figure you choose (250, 300, or 500, depending on formatting and font size), then runs the same division.

What the math cannot capture is difficulty. A 2,000-word technical manual and a 2,000-word short story take a genuinely different amount of time for the same person, because dense, unfamiliar material forces more re-reading and slower processing than a straightforward narrative. Every result on this page is an honest estimate, not a guarantee, and it gets more accurate the closer your chosen WPM is to your real reading speed on that kind of material.

Use Your Own Reading Speed, Not a Guess

Most reading time tools assume a single fixed speed for every visitor, usually somewhere around 200 to 250 WPM. That works fine as a default, but it is a stranger's average, not your actual reading speed. This calculator's slider goes from 100 to 600 WPM specifically so you can plug in a number that reflects you.

Here is why it matters: say you have a 5,000-word article to read. At the generic default of 200 WPM, that is a 25-minute estimate. But if your real reading speed is closer to 320 WPM, the same article is genuinely a 16-minute read, a 9-minute gap that can be the difference between starting it now and putting it off for later.

Don't know your real WPM? Measure it in about 60 seconds with the free reading speed test, which includes a comprehension check so the number reflects real reading, not skimming. Then come back and set the slider above to your result.

Reading Time for Common Word Counts

Landed here without an exact word count handy? These are approximate, commonly cited figures for typical document types, alongside reading time at a slow, average, and fast pace.

Reading Time vs. Speaking Time: Why They're Different

If you searched for a speech or presentation time calculator, this is the toggle you want. Silent reading and spoken delivery are paced completely differently: reading moves as fast as your eyes and brain can process text, while speech is paced by breath, articulation, and deliberate pauses for emphasis. That is why the same document takes noticeably longer to say out loud than to read silently.

Average silent reading runs around 200 to 300 WPM (Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis puts the adult average at approximately 238 WPM), while average spoken delivery for presentations and speeches runs roughly 130 to 160 WPM. That means the same text typically takes about 1.5 to 2 times longer to speak than to read silently.

ModeTypical rate1,000 words takes about
Silent reading200-300 WPM (avg. ~238)4 min
Speaking aloud130-160 WPM6-7 min

Use the "Speaking time" toggle in the calculator above to switch instantly between the two, without conflating a reading estimate with a presentation length.

What Counts as an "Average" Reading Speed?

This calculator defaults to 238 WPM, based on Marc Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis of silent reading rate research, which found an average adult non-fiction reading speed of about 238 WPM (a bit higher for fiction). Most adults fall somewhere in the 200 to 300 WPM range, with plenty of real variation by material, familiarity, and individual reader. For a fuller breakdown of speed by age, reading level, and skimming vs. careful reading, see the reading speed benchmarks page.

How to Cut Your Reading Time in Half

An estimate is only useful up to a point. If "42 minutes" feels like too long, here is what actually shortens it:

  1. 1

    Measure your real reading speed

A generic average leaves accuracy on the table. Take the free reading speed test and use your actual WPM in the calculator above.

  2. 2

    Train with RSVP

Rapid serial visual presentation shows one word at a time at a fixed point, cutting the eye movement that slows most readers down. Try the free RSVP reader.

  3. 3

    Reduce subvocalization

Silently sounding out each word in your head caps your reading speed near your speaking rate. Fixed-point word presentation naturally reduces this habit over time.

Reading Time Calculator FAQ

How long does it take to read 1,000 words?

At the average adult silent reading rate of about 238 words per minute (Brysbaert, 2019), 1,000 words takes roughly 4 minutes. A slower reader around 150 WPM would take closer to 7 minutes, and a faster reader around 350 WPM would finish in under 3 minutes. Plug in your own measured speed above for a number that actually reflects you.

How is reading time calculated?

The math is simple: word count divided by words per minute (WPM) gives you minutes. If you enter a page count instead of a word count, this calculator first converts pages to words using a words-per-page constant you choose (250, 300, or 500), then runs the same division. The result is always an estimate, since actual reading time depends on the reader and the difficulty of the material, not just word count.

How long does it take to read a 300-page book?

At roughly 300 words per page, a 300-page book is about 90,000 words. At the average adult rate of 238 WPM, that is roughly 6 hours 20 minutes of reading. At a faster personalized speed of 350 WPM, the same book drops to about 4 hours 17 minutes. Fiction tends to read a little faster than dense non-fiction, so treat this as a starting estimate rather than an exact figure.

What's the difference between reading time and speaking time for the same text?

Silent reading and speaking aloud use very different rates. Average silent reading runs around 200 to 300 WPM, while spoken delivery for a presentation or speech typically runs 130 to 160 WPM, since speech is paced by breath, articulation, and pauses for emphasis. The same 1,000-word document that takes about 4 minutes to read silently takes roughly 6 to 7 minutes to deliver as a speech, about 1.5 to 2 times longer. Use the "Speaking time" toggle above to switch between the two.

What reading speed should I use if I don't know my own WPM?

Start with the default of 238 WPM, the average adult silent reading rate from Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis. That is a reasonable stand-in for most non-fiction reading. For a number that actually reflects you rather than a stranger's average, take the free reading speed test, which measures your real WPM with a comprehension check in about a minute, then enter that number into the slider above.

Does this calculator store or share my pasted text?

No. The word count happens entirely in your browser as you type or paste. Nothing is uploaded, saved, or sent anywhere, and there is no signup or account required to use the calculator.
